Last Date for Income Tax Returns Filing in Pakistan Extended by FBR 2022

As per Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) had firstly, announced through an official notification the last date for Income Tax Return Filing for the Tax Year 2021 was 30th September 2021, but on Thursday, 30th September 2021, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) announced a 15 days extension in the deadline for Income Tax Returns Filing until October 15, 2021.

In an official circular, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) said the September 30, deadline was extended by 15 days due to some serious technical problems in the IRIS system of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) for Income Tax Returns Filing. The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) had repeatedly insisted that the deadline would not be extended. However, it had instructed its Inland Revenue Chief Commissioners to provide extensions for filing income tax returns for people facing difficulties. It has been observed that the system worked smoothly and filed 150,000 Income Tax Returns on 28th September which is the highest number ever filed in a single day. Meanwhile, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), like last year, has improved its ability to provide income taxpayers with seamless services. However, many social media users complained that the IRIS site was crashed on Thursday. According to Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) sources, approximately 140,000 Income Tax Returns have been filed till Sept. 28, which is a record.

The Karachi Tax Bar Association (KTBA) Demanded for 90 Days Extension

The Karachi Tax Bar Association (KTBA) had earlier called on Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan Niyazi to extend the deadline for Income Tax Returns Filing by three months, that is, up to December 31. The Karachi Tax Bar Association (KTBA) pointed out that the fulfillment of the 90-day period was granted under the law to file the income tax return under section 118 of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001. It also highlighted the unavailability of the FBR website for 15 days. It was added that the 90-day period should only begin when the correct and uncompromising filing of income tax return, in accordance with the provisions of the law, is uploaded to the IRIS Portal, which is yet not done. The Karachi Tax Bar Association (KTBA) further stated that the FBR Portal, both FBR, and IRIS” remained hacked and disabled from August 14, 2021, and remained in-active from time to time until the end of August 2021 which also denied taxpayers an unlimited right of 90 days, prescribed by law to file income tax returns. On Tuesday 27th September 2021, the FBR issued a circular to facilitate taxpayers to complete and file their income tax returns for the two days with extended hours for filing tax returns taxes. This was in addition to a nationwide awareness campaign involving prominent personalities and national heroes, urging people to submit their income tax returns in time to improve tax compliance in the country. The FBR introduced the income tax returns forms in July 2021 to meet the 90-day statutory requirement of three months, as envisaged under the income tax law.
